When we've talked about shotgun microphones in the past, it has been from the perspective of a mid-range shotgun--the RODE NTG-2. We've had several requests for reviews of less pricey shotgun options so here's a quick look at the Takstar SGC-598, an approximately $40 USD mic that is designed to sit on top of your camera.

If you want great sound, we talk about how to place the mic much closer to your talent--yes, using the mic in a way it was not intended. Somehow the manufacturers of these lower-end mics seem to suggest that shotgun mics are supposed to sit on top of your camera. Checkout a sample here that shows why that is not the best approach to getting good sound and alternatives so that you can get much better sound!
